September 2014 News

Shalom and welcome back after a difficult summer of war in Israel.  We hope for peaceful times ahead.

For those who don’t know me, I am Beth Sofer Diker, the new but second time, co-president of Sisterhood. I am looking forward to socializing and working with you all to make a Sisterhood that is fun, educational and useful to the community.

We have scheduled several planning meetings to which all are welcomed and encouraged to share their ideas. The fall planning meetings will take place on Wednesday, September 10th and October 29th at 8 PM and Sunday, December 14th  at 10 AM in Menchel Hall. We hope to see many of you there.

Our kick-off event and paid up membership brunch is scheduled for Sunday, September 14th at 10 AM. We will have an author talk with our own Rita Plush, discussing her new book of short stories called Alterations. Our programming continues with the Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on Sunday, October 19th.  This year our Torah Fund Brunch will take place on Sunday, November 16th at 10 AM. We are happy to announce that the tireless Maris Blechner is our honoree this year. To complete our fall events, we will open our gift shop for Hanukkah sales on December 7th and 14th . If you have any innovative ideas about what kinds of gifts you would like to buy, let us know.

Plans for the winter and spring are diverse and hopefully there is something for everyone. Sisterhood Shabbat will take place on January 17, 2015. Each year our members lead the service in any way they can. It has been very fulfilling watching our members increase or change their roles each year. Please volunteer for something with which you are comfortable or volunteer for something that is uncomfortable for you and we will help you become comfortable. We plan to have an event on Sunday February 8, 2015 but the details are not yet available. On Sunday, March 1, 2015 we are looking for volunteers to help put together our Shalach Manot (Purim Project Assembly) for distribution to our congregation on Purim. Maris Blechner continues to be our chair for this event. Thanks, Maris. We will continue our annual tradition of the Women’s Seder on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Gaby Weilmann has volunteered to chair this event again. Thank you, Gaby. Our spring events continue with the outlet shopping trip on April 26, 2015. I found the best little black dress during last year’s trip. We expect to have an event on May 3 and a final event on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, but their details have not yet been confirmed. I hope you will make every effort to join us this year.

Have a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year!
